SOCIAL JUSTICE
The Nissenbaum Law Group’s social justice team represents nonprofits and faith-based organizations that advocate for progressive humanitarian reform.
Pro bono social justice representation
The Nissenbaum Law Group has a robust pro bono social justice team made up of attorneys and paralegals who are dedicated to donating their time and professional skills to help organizations seeking to help the abused and suffering. In recognition of the firm’s commitment to social justice representation, the New Jersey State Bar Association has honored it with the 2019 Pro Bono Award for Small Law Firms.
The Nissenbaum Law Group represents non-profit and liberal faith-based organizations that advocate for reform in line with humanitarian values. The focus is not necessarily representing individuals who lack the means to hire an attorney. Instead, the aim is to provide pro bono legal services to organizations that are seeking to achieve progressive objectives on a larger canvas; in short, the Nissenbaum Law Group’s social justice team advocates for advocates.
The need is great. There is a surprisingly large number of social justice nonprofits that have no reliable way of obtaining counsel for both their day-to-day legal needs and the additional law-related aspects of their justice work. Accordingly, the firm has established a social justice team of attorneys and paralegals to represent a rotating list of five select nonprofit advocacy groups. It endeavors to do so with the same level of intensity and focus, the same responsiveness, that its paying clients rightly demand. Notably, the firm also reserves a sixth opening for a nonprofit it incubates: a group with a terrific idea for social justice, but inadequate means or experience to implement it.
The firm’s message to these clients is simple and straightforward: You protect the world. We’ll protect you.
The Nissenbaum Law Group believes that attorneys need to hear the call to justice work and to acknowledge the gift they have been given of having the opportunity to really matter. The legal profession must marshal its abilities and resources into a concentrated blast, the arc of which will serve to propel real and lasting change. The times demand no less. The private bar is being called to fix this broken world.
The firm’s social justice team focuses on the following:
- composing bills and accompanying policy statements for new legislation to be sponsored in the NJ Legislature;
- preparing rule-making petitions to seek the enactment of NJ regulations consistent with statutory mandates;
- preparing public comment for proposed regulations published by executive agencies in the NJ Register;
- filing amicus briefs in litigation of social justice import;
- providing legal assistance with regard to other social justice initiatives of non-profit and liberal faith-based organizations that advocate for reform in line with humanitarian values.
